Freestyle Group Dig at Pala Chief Mine

This dig is best described as a free style: bring your own tools and dig your own way . Collecting ranges from walking around and raking the dirt to expose the rocks, or attacking the pegmatites themselves with tools like pick axes, hand shovels, and rock hammers. The whole side of Chief Mountain is the collecting area, with 100 year old dumps that contain tourmaline, kunzite, morganite ,aquamarine , quartz, garnets, both loose and on matrix. Lots of uphill walking on this one! 12 years of age and up are suggested.

Recommended tools: Hand shovel or garden trowel; spray bottle filled with water; 5 gallon bucket or other way to carry your rocks around; small ziplock baggies for little finds.

Other possible tools: Sifter; rake or hand rake; chisel; rock hammer (or any kind of hammer); pick axe.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

  • Payment is required at time of registration.

  • Liability waiver from the mine must be completed and returned to Loretta by May 10th at the latest. (after your registration, Loretta will email you the information packet with the waiver)

  • We will meet at the mine when it opens by 7:30.

  • Wear shoes that you can walk in dirt/hike in

  • Consider bringing/wearing a backpack

  • You can bring water (or other drinks) and snacks

  • You keep everything you find! (They say that if you can get it into your car you can take it home!)

  • You can set your gear down while digging, so don’t worry about having to lug it around the mountain all day!

** Sometimes because this dig finishes before the main dig, the mine will allow you to jump into the remaining time of that dig for an extra $25 (cash preferred). Because we have a large group, I cannot guarantee this, but it may be possible!
